Behind the 4K Live Stream: Singapore International Choral Festival 2026
Esplanade Concert Hall, Singapore.
On 20 July 2026, Label Broadcast had the privilege of supporting the 10th Singapore International Choral Festival (SICF) at the Esplanade Concert Hall by providing professional 4K live streaming services around the world via YouTube Live.
This year's festival marked an exciting milestone as the organisers moved towards 4K live production, allowing viewers to experience the performances with greater detail, rich colour reproduction and enhanced visual clarity.
Choral performances present a unique challenge for video compression. Wide stage shots contain dozens of performers, intricate costume details and complex lighting, while close-up camera angles require accurate preservation of facial expressions and subtle movements. Maintaining visual consistency across these changing scenes places significant demands on the encoder throughout the live production.
Raising the Standard for Live Streaming
Producing a broadcast-quality 4K live stream involves far more than simply increasing the video resolution.
Compared to conventional HD workflows, 4K production demands substantially greater processing resources, higher network bandwidth and more careful encoder optimisation to maintain exceptional picture quality while meeting the delivery requirements of modern streaming platforms.
One interesting distinction between consumer and professional encoding platforms lies in the level of control available to the operator. Software encoders are typically designed to deliver excellent results with minimal configuration, making them ideal for a wide range of streaming applications. Broadcast hardware encoders, by contrast, provide much finer control over compression behaviour and encoding parameters, allowing experienced engineers to optimise image quality, latency and bitrate for the specific production environment.
For this production, Label Broadcast deployed the Matrox Monarch EDGE E4 as the primary encoding platform.
Designed specifically for professional broadcast applications, the Monarch EDGE E4 provides deterministic hardware encoding, low-latency operation and fine-grained control over compression parameters that are essential for premium live productions.
Unlike many software-based encoding solutions that rely primarily on predefined presets, professional hardware encoders allow engineers to optimise encoding behaviour for each production environment. Its dedicated hardware architecture ensures encoding performance remains predictable throughout long-duration live productions without competing for system resources with other software processes.

Preserving Performance Through Compression
Although YouTube Live ultimately transcode incoming streams into multiple adaptive bitrate profiles for viewers across different devices and network conditions, the quality of the source contribution remains critically important.
Throughout the event, the improvements delivered by the professional encoding workflow were clearly visible.

Whether transitioning between wide auditorium shots, close-up performances, conductor movements or audience reactions, the encoder consistently preserved fine image detail and maintained stable visual quality despite the considerable computational complexity involved in compressing 4K video in real time.
Equally important was the audio performance. Choral music places exceptionally high demands on live streaming systems due to its dynamic range, vocal harmonics and acoustic characteristics. Maintaining synchronisation and audio fidelity throughout the production was therefore just as important as preserving video quality.

The result was a noticeably richer viewing experience that remained evident even after YouTube's own transcoding process.
Professional Engineering Beyond the Encoder
Reliable live streaming depends on much more than the encoder itself.
Throughout the production, Label Broadcast provided comprehensive engineering support, including:
- Professional encoder configuration and performance tuning
- Confidence monitoring of the outgoing programme feed
- Continuous internet network monitoring
- Real-time Quality of Service (QoS) monitoring
- Real-time Quality of Experience (QoE) monitoring
- On-site engineering support throughout the event
This layered monitoring approach enables our engineers to quickly identify whether an issue originates from the production system, encoder, network infrastructure or downstream delivery platform, significantly reducing troubleshooting time during live broadcasts.

Delivering Confidence for Every Live Event
Every live production presents unique technical challenges.
Whether supporting cultural performances, international sporting events, corporate productions or broadcast contribution workflows, Label Broadcast focuses on delivering dependable engineering services backed by professional monitoring, operational expertise and broadcast-grade technology.
The successful completion of the 10th Singapore International Choral Festival continues our commitment to providing reliable live contribution and streaming services for organisations that demand quality, stability and operational confidence.
Congratulations to all participating choirs and award winners of this year's Singapore International Choral Festival. We are honoured to have played a part in bringing your performances to audiences around the world.
For Label Broadcast, successful live streaming is measured not only by whether a stream stays online, but by how faithfully it reproduces the experience for audiences watching remotely.
